Proving the Herman-Protocol Conjecture

چکیده
Herman’s self-stabilization algorithm, introduced 25 years ago, is a well-studied synchronous randomized protocol for enabling a ring of N processes collectively holding any odd number of tokens to reach a stable state in which a single token remains. Determining the worst-case expected time to stabilization is the central outstanding open problem about this protocol. It is known that there is a constant h such that any initial configuration has expected stabilization time at most hN2. Ten years ago, McIver and Morgan established a lower bound of 4/27 ≈ 0.148 for h, achieved with three equally-spaced tokens, and conjectured this to be the optimal value of h. A series of papers over the last decade gradually reduced the upper bound on h, with the present record (achieved in 2014) standing at approximately 0.156. In this paper, we prove McIver and Morgan’s conjecture and establish that h = 4/27 is indeed optimal. 1998 ACM Subject Classification F.1.2 Modes of Computation

Model Checking Failed Conjectures in Theorem Proving: A Case Study
Interactive mechanical theorem proving can provide high assurance of correct design, but it can also be a slow iterative process. Much time is spent determining why a proof of a conjecture is not forthcoming. In some cases, the conjecture is false and in others, the attempted proof is insufficient. In this case study, we use the SAL family of model checkers to generate a concrete counterexample...
متن کاملFirst-order theorem proving in the exploration of Andrews-Curtis conjecture
Proving or disproving the Andrews-Curtis conjecture remains one of the outstanding open problems in combinatorial group theory. In short, it states that every balanced presentation of the trivial group can be transformed (aka. AC-simplified) into a trivial presentation by a sequence of Nielsen transformations on the relators together with conjugations of relators. It is believed that the conjec...

Using concepts from the character theory of finite groups, it is shown that Lieb's Permanental Dominance Conjecture is equivalent to a certain maximal eigenvalue conjecture.
متن کاملMulti-output Ranking for Automated Reasoning
Premise selection and ranking is a pressing problem for applications of automated reasoning to large formal theories and knowledge bases. Smart selection of premises has a significant impact on the efficiency of automated proof assistant systems in large theories. Despite this, machine-learning methods for this domain are underdeveloped. In this paper we propose a general learning algorithm to ...
متن کاملSeveral Tokens in Herman's algorithm
We have a cycle of N nodes and there is a token on an odd number of nodes. At each step, each token independently moves to its clockwise neighbor or stays at its position with probability 2 . If two tokens arrive to the same node, then we remove both of them. The process ends when only one token remains. The question is that for a fixed N , which is the initial configuration that maximizes the ...
